This issue of the Penal Press includes articles about the political attitudes towards imprisonment and crime in 1958 Canada. Typical articles of welfare and recreation, sports, and religious encouragement are present along with articles speaking to Canada’s transition into drug treatment centres, the use of longer prison sentences as a deterrent, and reaction to the criticisms of the penal press itself. This issue goes further to speak on the topic of drugs, mentioning the possibility of changes to drug legislations and Canada’s response to the increased use of drugs to experiment with drug treatment centres.
