This issue concentrates on society’s views of criminals and the impact these opinions have on prisoners upon their release, specifically their employment. There are several articles discussing society’s role in rehabilitating offenders as well as the idea that punishment should not only fit the crime, but also the prisoner. There is a brief mention of the 57 prisoners that received reduced sentences (some were even freed outright) for their bravery in rescuing victims of the Northeast Airlines plane crash at Rikers Island. Another article discusses the recommendation of the United Nations Congress on the Prevention of crime and Treatment of Offenders to introduce bar-less prisons.
