The September 1990 issue of The Mountain Echo (Edition #39, Mountain Institution) reports on the United Nations “Book Voyage” for International Literacy Year. Mountain prisoners submitted thirty poems, essays, and drawings—more than any other Pacific-region institution. The effort was supported by teacher Dr. Robert Bennett and Assistant Warden (Programs) Dave McLaren. CSC requested a dedicated prisoners’ book. The project visited all 42 facilities, and the top 50 pages formed a “Giant Book” for the UN. The issue also announces a 12-week Human Sexuality and Life Skills course delivered by VEES. This course was arranged with SFU’s Hendrik Hoekema and led by Cindy Bishop, beginning September 11. Registration was coordinated through Case Management Officers. The issue further includes an Indigenous “Yellow Horseman” message addressing colonial harms and a call for self-government.
