The August 23rd, 1989 (17th edition) issue of the Insider features editorials on entertainment, sports, news on local crime in San Quentin, discussions of penal reform, and updates on prison labour legislations, including ACA 11 (the Governors work plan) and AB 1291 (keeping prisoners close to home). Moreover, this issue also includes letters from Barbara Boldt of the Community Arts Council, who criticized the showcasing of prisoner art in a Vancouver gallery, alongside responses from incarcerated artists defending their work, clarifying that they fund their own materials, and challenging misconceptions about the legitimacy of their artistic expression. The edition devotes several pages to the annual prison exhibition, “Inside/Out/Art from Prison” a cost-comparison of canteen lists between two security prisons (Matsqui and Drumhellers), and a note from the editorial team explaining that the issue was delayed due to censorship conflicts.
