In this issue of Tarpaper, a discussion on the purpose of incarceration is presented with focus given to the living conditions of prisoners, and its possible effect on deterrence from future offending. A dialogue between a retentionist and an abolitionist is also featured on the matter of capital punishment, as well as letters to the editor discussing parole board decision making. A few programs and clubs available to prisoners of Matsqui Institution are promoted including the ZZOOOMMM Project, the Bridge Club, Jaycees, and the French Club. Janet Currie is interviewed in regards to her resignation from being Related Training Officer, and to talk about her experience working with within the Institution as a woman, also her thoughts on justice, prisoner treatment, and causes of crime. Creative writing is included as well as statistics about alcohol abuse.
